Flight tickets
Five things to check before buying a flight from Melbourne to Vietnam
Most problems with flight tickets appear after you have paid. The five points below take a few minutes to check, and could save your whole trip.
The name on the ticket must match your passport exactly
Write the surname, middle name and given name in the correct order, with the correct spacing. Correcting a name after the ticket is issued may cost a fee or may not be allowed, depending on the airline.
Passport and entry permission
Check how long your passport remains valid, because many countries and airlines require a passport valid for a minimum period after the arrival date. If you are of Vietnamese origin holding a foreign passport, see also the article on the 5-year visa exemption certificate.
Baggage comes with the fare type
On the same route, the cheapest fare may not include checked baggage. When travelling with family and bringing gifts back home, the cost of extra baggage can sometimes make a cheap ticket no longer cheap.
Connection times
For tickets with several legs, check that the time between two flights is enough to change terminals, go through security and collect your luggage if necessary. Flights on two different airlines need more spare time.
Change and cancellation conditions, and insurance
Ask clearly whether the ticket can be changed to another date, how much a change costs and how refunds work. For a long trip, travel insurance is worth considering at the same time as the ticket.
